New Adventure
My family and I are embarking on a new adventure! We bought 80 acres in Parkland County, Alberta and built our Dream house. We have just moved in to the house and are getting settled. My Daughter and her husband still have jobs, and are on the road a lot – but I will be relying on their help when they are home. My son and his family live just over an hour away.
Retirement
I have just retired from a management job in the BC lower mainland. It is quite a change moving from the city and a 9-5 job to the country and total isolation. The Covid restrictions don’t help much, I have not even met any of my neighbours. However, I am really enjoying how peaceful it is here.
Living in Alberta
The weather is another huge change for me. I have always lived in a temperate climate. Northern Alberta is COLD. It has been hovering from negative 10 degrees up to plus 3 degrees Celsius since we moved in. I have been told that we will have many days as cold as Negative 30 or 40 degrees. There is only a couple of inches of snow on the ground – the wind seems to blow it away. Hopefully I have bought enough warm clothing to deal with my first real winter.
The Sky is huge and beautiful. Every sunrise and every sunset are amazing shows that we are able to watch from our south facing windows and patio. At night, I can lie in bed and explore the sky. I have never seen so many stars. I don’t think I will ever tire of this.
I am eager to explore our property. My first big purchase was a tractor and then I learned how to drive it. I haven’t needed to do much with it yet, but I suspect I will need it when we get our next dump of snow. It is a big change from driving a desk and running a team of people!
Waiting for Spring
When spring comes, we can start creating our farm. We will build fences and shelters so we can start raising animals. The plans include; Horses, Goats, Pigs and Chickens. We will see how things go. 🙂
