So Many Projects on the go… AND The Table saw always wins

SO, My daughter and son-in-law have been commenting that I can’t start any new projects until I finish the ones that are underway… Here is where I stood with my projects as of last Saturday when everything got put on hold (by table saw):

Ikea Cabinetry

95% competed.

This project was delayed by Ikea inventory shortages for quite a while.

I need one more trip to Ikea to pick up two more shelves. All my clothes have been unpacked and put away. I still need to make the open shelves look nice – or buy more doors.

Craft Room

The flooring and baseboards have been completed. Once my desk is set up I can unpack the craft room. (my desk is still in the Sea Can, and too heavy for me to move.)

Chicken Coop

The Coop has been delivered and I have insulated the walls. Still to do:

  1. Insulate roof.
  2. cover openings in eaves with Hardware cloth
  3. install vapour barrier and wall boards
  4. install rubber flooring
  5. build roosts and poop boards
  6. build pop door (possibly automatic opener)
  7. build the chicken run
  8. install nest boxes
  9. set up feed and water
  10. spread bedding and we are ready for birds

Goat Barn

  • Install rubber flooring and add bedding.
  • add bunk beds and a stall
  • set up hay, grain and mineral feeders as well as water.
  • set up fencing
  • The goats will be coming home in April, once they have their kids.

Chicken tractor

I started building this because I couldn’t work on the other things. I purchased the book with directions and got all my pieces cut. The author recommends lap joints for stability and to keep it light. I cut about half of the lap joints using a circular saw… a very slow process.

There are lots of different styles of chicken tractor. I chose the John Suscovich style chicken tractor because I wanted to be able to stand (almost) upright inside the tractor, and because it can also work as a greenhouse or ??? https://www.amazon.com/Stress-Free-Chicken-Tractor-Plans-Step/dp/0996567488

My pieces are taking up space in the SIL’s garage, so he requested that this project get completed first.

Then my son in law suggested it would go way faster using a table saw instead of the circular saw. He gave me a quick run down on how to use the table saw and I started working on a lap joint,

The Table Saw always wins…

Within 10 minutes I was bleeding all over the place. After some quick first aid, it was off to the hospital for stitches to the ends of the middle and ring fingers on my right hand.

When he triage nurse asked me what happened I quipped “fingers v Table Saw”. She was very quick with her comeback. “The table saw always wins.”

For the last few days, I have not been able to do anything! Avulsed fingers are very painful! If I wasn’t sleeping off the effects of the pain meds, I was nauseous from the antibiotics. The doctor did not have enough skin to stitch together so stitched the skin to my finger nails!

I thought about including the gory photos, but decided that you probably didn’t really want to see them.

I am now able to function again, with care not to use those fingers. Soon I will be able to get back to my projects.

On the Plus Side – Trevor completed the rest of the lap joints for me <3 I should be able to put it together in the next couple of days and get it out of his garage.

  1. Laurie, you guys are amazing. Love your pictures. Love your stories. (Well except that the table saw one). I hadn’t really wanted to go to Edmonton, until now.

  2. All I can say is OMG!😂 I am always in full PPE for when I work with my saw, stand with my but two feet from the wee devil, and pray like heck! Thing scares me to hell.
When I hit a knot in the 🪵 I jump a mile high😂 kudos to your bravery!

    1. Melissa and Trevor are insisting that I use it again, once my fingers heal. I know what I did wrong, and certainly won’t do it again. But I don’t see the table saw ever being my favourite tool…

  3. You are amazing!! I love your posts! Keep up the good work! I am pretty sure you and Gord have similar stories 👍 yes, the saw always wins 😳
