The first baby goats have been born on Titan Ranch. It has been an exciting week.
Jolene Delivered First
Jolene was so Huge, we knew she would be delivering soon. She gave us triplets on April 5, 2022.
We did not get to witness the delivery. When I checked her in the morning, I saw some discharge, so I knew things could be starting. When I fed fodder at noon, I wondered why she wasn’t coming to the fence. Then, I heard the babies crying.
We moved Jolene into the barn, kidding stalls, with her three beautiful babies – Two boys and a girl.
I suspect that the kids had just hit the ground when I discovered them. Jolene passed her placenta about an hour after we moved them into the barn.
Juniper had a singleton
Two days later, Juniper delivered her big beautiful doeling. They moved into the barn to join Jolene’s family for a few days of momma and baby bonding.
Tattoos and Ear tags
I was dreading the job of tattooing and tagging the babies’ ears. I had watched lots of UTUBE and purchased the appropriate tools, but I did not want to hurt them.
Luckily, My daughter was home to help. We started out with her holding the kid and me doing the dirty work. After I accidently got the green tattoo ink all over myself and the babies, Melissa took over and I held the kids…
Jolene’s three kids were covered in green patches, but by the time we got to Juniper’s doeling we were doing a bit better. There is hope for Bat chicks progeny to not be covered in ink!
Kids are so ADORABLE
The kids have kept us entertained by frolicking’s and jumping all over. They have now moved back into the main Doe pen.
TGP Mocha, Juniper’s chocolate coloured doeling, gave us a scare. For some reason she decided that she wanted to have her nap in the small space under the doe house – 8 feet from either end. Juniper and I were at our whit’s end, looking for her. I thought for sure an Eagle had taken her. Suddenly she reappeared as if nothing happened. I have now blocked off her access to the space.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best
I had been anxious about the pending births, but Kiko momma’s know what they are doing. See My prior Post Ready for Kidding They didn’t need any help from me.
I did dip the umbilical cords in Betadine and give the babies and Mommas some extra nutrients. Aside from that, they did it all on their own.
We have our first baby goats born on Titan Ranch – hopefully the first of many. Bat chick has not delivered yet. We expect she will deliver about 3 weeks after Jolene. She went into heat again around Christmas.
Next year we will add the 2021 doelings into the mix, to give us 5 does for kidding.
