Chicken Coop Changes

roos in their half of the coop

Now that our barn has been delivered, we no longer need to use half of the chicken coop as our feed room. We made some changes to the chicken coop and now have two separate chicken areas. We have Big Red and all the ladies in the original section, and all the excess roosters in the new section.

Later, we will be able to use the new section for separate breeding areas, or to raise young birds that are not quite ready to join the big birds.

Now Each side of the coop has a nice roost bar with poop boards and a pop door, The pop door leads to an outdoor run. We just have the dog kennel panels set up temporarily for the 2nd side of the run. We will be building more wall sections and covering it with netting to protect from overhead attack.

Changes Outside the Coop

The other day there was a big storm with lots of wind. When we went down to the chicken coop the next morning there was an empty spot on the ground. We could tell something was missing, but couldn’t immediately decide what it was.

The chicken tractor had blown away during the storm. We found a pile of tarp, chicken wire, and lumber up against the fence, about 200 yards away.

We will salvage what we can once some more of the snow melts. It is pretty difficult to get out to the wreckage! It’s OK… We decided that we didn’t really want to raise meat chickens anyways.

You can see what the chicken tractor looked like before the storm in this post about the big round bale.
