Say Goodbye to the Ponytail!

Loving the messy, curly, short cut

Back story: The pressure washer incident…

Back in 1999, I was married to Keith, and he was pressure washing our house on the May long weekend. Being a corrections officer, with an armed forces background, Keith was Mr. Safety when it came to guns and stuff. So you would think I would be safe.

I needed to ask him a question, so when he stopped spraying to adjust the nozzle on the pressure washer, I tapped him on the shoulder. Somehow, he turned towards me and pulled the trigger!

From 18 inches away, I got 2400 PSI of water pressure across my neck. It removed all the skin from a portion of my neck, and reacted like a severe burn injury.

It took a long time to heal, and left a huge scar on my neck. So since then, I have kept my hair long. The scar is still there, twenty-some years later, but it doesn’t bother me any longer.

Office Hair

Being a manager in a business office, I kept my hair nicely styled. For years I straightened it or curled it every morning. I have a lot of hair, so it was a chore.

When covid hit, in March 2020, we switched to work from home for the most part. My hair went up into a pony tail and I don’t think I have styled it since then. Pre-Covid, I would never have gone to work in a pony tale. After March 2020, it really didn’t seem to matter.

Now on the farm

Now that I have retired from the office job, and spend my time working with tools, etc. on the farm; I have had to keep my long hair in a pony tail. If my hair fell in front of my eyes, it would make me sort of dizzy and/or disoriented. I have had enough of long hair.

Chop it off!

My daughter, Melissa, used to be a hair stylist. She still does hair for friends and family when she is not out on the road. I mentioned to her that I thought I should cut my hair off and she got excited! It had been a long time since she got to do a makeover! A few minutes later, there was a huge pile of discarded hair on the floor.

We kept it fairly long on top, and pixie short at the back and sides. I love it!

I wake up with horrible bed head hair every morning, but it is easy to wet it again and be ready for a new day. It took a few days to get used to the “messy look curls” but I have now embraced it.

  1. I love your hair; you look wonderful! I am contemplating doing the big chop too; I finally embrace my curl and now the grey, so it is the next step.

    1. I just got it cut again, so it is even shorter now! I love my little bit of curl, and I will see how I feel about the grey…

  2. Howdy Cousin! I LOVE the new short, sassy, messy, curly look!! It’s been 14 months since I’ve had my hair cut or trimmed and next week it’s coming off too! Short hair, don’t care!!!

  3. I think it looks great! And, this will be a lesson for me to never tap Keith on the shoulder when he is armed with the presser washer! I can totally see that happening. Don’t know where the scar is but I can’t see it and the hair looks great!

    1. At least we know Keith is good in an emergency… He handed me a dark coloured towel so I couldn’t see the blood, and had me at the ER in no time.

  4. Wow Laurie! I just read all your blog posts in one sitting. So happy for you starting out on your dream lifestyle! All the best and keep the blog posts coming!
