Moving into the Buck Pen
Today we moved the bucklings into the Buck Pen, 100 yards away from their moms and twin sisters. The girls came along to keep them company thru the fence for the first few hours.
I lured them to their new pen with food. Usually a bowl of grain is irresistible, but today there was lots of competition from the tall grasses. Loki went into the new enclosure with no problems, but Leo changed his mind at the last minute and went all the way back to the girls pen. I had to pick him up and carry him into the pen.
Lots of Screaming today
After a couple of hours I put the girls back into their pen. There has been a lot of calling back and forth since then…
Hopefully the boys will settle into their new home soon. Even though they have been separated from the girls for a few weeks, they have been able to sleep next to them, with just a mesh fence between them. It will be a big change for them being so far from their moms tonight.
Is that a Buck bed?
The bucklings are all moved into the buck pen now.
Are the goats growing as fast as they should?
I need to weigh the goats in the next few days to get their 90 day weights recorded. I know they are heavy, because I tweaked my back picking up Leo! Because our fencing isn’t complete yet, the goats have not had as much time on pasture as I would have liked. I hope their 90 day weights aren’t too far down because of this.
Weighing goats isn’t a simple procedure when you don’t have any fancy equipment. My friend has volunteered to give me a hand so I will let you know how it goes. Not sure if we will use the Ikea bag or a calf sling, along with the luggage scale…
