It is the start of Kiko Breeding Season at Titan Ranch.
It is time to allow our mature does in with our chosen buck, EZK Pay to Play. We waited until November 1 so that the babies will be born in April, after the worst of the cold weather. The gestational period is 5 months.
The Buck
EZK Pay to Play was purchased from Crazy Creek Ranch a few months ago. My regular readers will remember the trip to Saskatchewan to pick him up, along with a doe, EZK Bat Chick.
We had been Calling him Leif, but recently received his Registry Paperwork and found out they had already named him EZK Pay to Play. Now we call him Player, and he is living up to his name.
Player is currently 7.5 months old, but he is bigger than Bat Chick, and almost as big as the other mature does, Juniper and Jolene.
Our other boys are too closely related to the does to be bred with them. Player does have one great grandfather in common with our does. It is very difficult in Canada to find totally unrelated Purebred New Zealand bucks.
Romance
There is lots of flirting going on!
We have chosen to keep Player in with the mature does for 6 weeks, to ensure all three of the does have been bred. This allows for 2 complete heat cycles in case one of the does doesn’t catch during her first heat. There is only one day per heat cycle where the doe will actually let the buck breed her.
We haven’t seen the actual deed take place yet, but Player is giving it his all!
Fencing
We used the temporary fence panels to create double gates. This helped us ensure that this years kids did not get into the breeding pen.
Loki and Leo are very Jealous of Player…
Lily and Luna are very upset. They had still been nursing. This is the first time they have not had access to their moms for comfort and food. I lovingly call them “my little fatties”. It it time for them to be weaned.
All 4 of our kids from 2021 stand at the fence most of the day. Boys and girls are on opposite sides of the breeding pen. The doelings want their moms and to nurse. The buckings want in on the Kiko Breeding Season action!
Hopefully they will settle down soon!
