Fencing Update #1

Progress to date

This is taking a lot longer than we thought! Between Covid related supply issues and lack of time at home, it is going really slowly.

We had trouble getting the fence posts we wanted. We ended up getting thinner line posts than what we wanted. Our corner posts are big and sturdy and they are the most important.

The plan…

Melissa and Trevor made sure they would be home for the May long weekend, and I arranged the rental of a post pounder. We initially thought we would get it all done on that weekend. We were so naïve…

May Long weekend

We picked up the post pounder on Friday afternoon and got started on Friday evening.

The post pounder

We worked at it most of the weekend. Melissa and Trevor did most of the actual work. I spent a lot of time driving the truck forward 10 feet at a time.

My grandkids were visiting from the coast that weekend as well, so they got in on the fun. The oldest has her learners license, so she spent some time driving the truck. They both learned to operate the post pounder and the tractor. I think they had fun and they were a big help.

Don’t they trust me???

OK, I will admit I can be a bit accident prone…

I guess that is why I never got close to the post pounder…

Most of the posts in

On the Monday of the holiday weekend it poured rain. We were not able to get all the posts in. We have most of them in, but we will need to rent the post pounder again to finish up.

Since then…

Melissa and Trevor have been busy at work and have had no time at home. Well, Trevor did have one day at home, but that was the day I got the tractor stuck…

Still to do:

  • Melissa and Trevor got the brace wood up. We still need the wires to finish the corner and gate braces.
  • We have to put up all the fence wire. We have 12 rolls of sheep and goat woven fence with 4″ by 4″ openings to put up and stretch.
  • Then we want electric top wires to keep out predator’s and probably a hot wire about a foot off the ground to keep the goats off the fences.
  • Our gates are still on back order due to Covid…

Hopefully we can get some time to work on the fences soon. It is not something that I feel that I can do by myself, so I am waiting for when my family is able to help. (Not to mention that I would probably find a way to hurt myself if I tried to do it on my own…) The goats could really use a bigger space than what they are currently confined to. And… the bucklings are going to need their own space soon…
