Lead Up
The Farmer who hayed our fields left us two big round bales to feed our goats thru winter. These bales are huge – about 1600 lbs each, and my tractor is not big enough to lift them.
I wanted to move them closer to the animal sheds. Because I can’t lift them, I tried rolling them.
The first one rolled nicely into place, near the chicken coop.
The Second Big Round Bale Burst
I started to roll it, the same way I had rolled the first one. I pushed it with the back of the tractor bucket.
Instead of rolling nicely, the net wrap came undone and the bale burst!
Forks on for the now smaller bale
About a foot of hay unrolled, all the way around the bale. I put the forks onto the tractor, and was able to lift the now smaller bale… Just Barely.
I moved it next to the chicken coop and then tried to tip it on end, on top of a pallet.
IT Exploded!!!!
Race against the Rain
I needed to get the rest of the hay moved over onto the new pile, and cover it with a tarp before the rain started. (of course, stuff like this cannot happen on a sunny day…)
A quick trip into town to purchase tarps, and about twenty trips back and forth with the tractor bucket full of hay, and I got it done. The rain started just as I was finishing up.
This is why I prefer small bales…
